Fracture of Petrous Bone with Facial Paralysis in a 4-Year-Old Child.

SUMMARY

Authors were concerned with the indications of operations to be done for facial paralysis attending fractures of the petrous bone. 1. In a child aged 4 years, longitudinal fracture of the petrous bone resulted in the paralysis of the facial nerve and secondary otitis. Operative autopsy revealed comminuted fracture of the lateral atticus. wall, and luxation of the auditory ossicles. No lesion of any nerve was found, wherefore no nerve operation was carried out. Facial paralysis healed in 2 weeks. In the opinion of the author, prophylactic operation is, in fractures of the petrous bone, admitted not only to prevent intracranial complications, but also for the paralysis of the facial nerve.
